“Try not to become a copy of someone else. Not even a perfect copy. Originals are always honored over duplicates.”

-Edmond Mbiaka

One of the worst and most unpleasant things for any blogger is to find their content being copied by others.

I realized the unpleasantness of this situation from my own encounter with it. It was a surprise for me and (take my word for it) not the good kind.

Once you are aware of the existence of your own created content in someone else’s website, you will need some time to deal with this fact. After you have accepted the situation and begin to breathe normally again, you will need to decide your counter strategy.

By counter strategy I mean to plan a set of steps, to counter with the problem of copied content. With the right strategy you will either get your content removed from such websites or make them pay for their (mis)deed.

Counter Strategy to counter attack on content theft!

The following are the steps that you can use as your counter strategy if and when you need to counter attack the issue of content theft:

Step #1

The first thing for you to do is find out the contact details of the owner or webmaster of the website. Look for the contact page or about page to find email ids. If you find it, write them a mail stating your ownership of the content that they have copied. Ask them to remove it immediately since they don’t have the right to use your content without your permission.

Step #2

One important thing you must do is leave comment (or perhaps comments) in the particular blog post which was copied from your original content. This is something I personally did and in my opinion you should too. You can write a comment like the one below-

This post has been copied from my original content. Please remove this as soon as possible. You do not have the right to use the content without my permission.

Step #3

After you have commented and e-mailed to them, you can wait for some time to get a reply. At this point I was very impatient to wait for more than a few minutes. So I went on twitter to find the person who had copied my content.

This is the third step, you can go on social media to speak your voice and put pressure to get your content removed. Find that person, if you have a name search it or you can copy the url of their site and paste it in the search area on twitter. Once you find it, tweet about it, tag them in your tweet, share the copied post tweet (if there is one) with a comment and basically say what you have to say. But do not use any coarse or foul language. Be classy!

Step #4

By now you should have your content removed and let’s say within 48 hours this should be done. But what if the above steps are not enough. We will have no other option but to report any such site which violates a genuine creator’s copyright.

  • If the website in question is hosted on wordpress.com you may report the copied content to WordPress on this link-

  • You can also remove all copied content from Google by reporting it to Google. You will have to visit Google’s DMCA page (link here) and submit your legal request to remove copied content. This might take some time but you will be able to remove all such copied content from Google search.

  • If the site is using an adsense account, you can report it to adsense and get them terminated from adsense program. Here is the link to the support page for reporting your stolen content.

Step #5

If you don’t have time to visit different support pages and go through the process of reporting your stolen content, you can go for third party takedown services. These third party services will do your work and get it done fast. You can go on Google to find several such DMCA takedown services. Compare the prices and benefits to decide which service will suit you the best.

DMCA takedown is one such option available in this category of third party solution. A lot of people depend on these services for dealing with stolen content.

I hope the counter strategy will work for you as it had worked for me. I don’t think you will need to go through all the steps, hopefully the first three will/ should be enough.

It will be very annoying to put your extra time and effort into making a wrong thing right, a wrong which wasn’t your doing! You are not responsible or at fault for the wrong doing of such content thieves.

But, once you succeed in protecting your intellectual right over your content, you will be satisfied and all your hard work will be worth it.

  1. I am a neophyte on wordpress. I do not understand much about re-blogging vs copying. I tried to find a re-blog click, could not. I clicked on share it took me to my blog. I then tried to title my blog as are-blog. It looks like wordpress has removed this person’s blog from my followed sites. It was one of my favorites. I am very frustrated. So, I am figuring out that a blogger can allow a re-blog or not, Can I get this blogger back as one of followed blogs?

    1. Hello there,
I know how you feel, at first figuring out the in’s & out’s can be tricky. You’ll soon get the hang of it. So, don’t you worry!
Re blogging someone’s blog post is not copying. You’re sharing something you loved & giving full credit to the author.
You may try & search the blogger name in wp reader, if you find it follow the blog again.
If you have doubts about sharing that blogs content, you may write them a comment or send an email asking if sharing their content is fine.
I hope this was helpful. Also, welcome to the amazing world of blogging. 🙂😃
